The cave has a lot of laminated red clay called keel that used to be mixed with buttermilk for paint. It is why the classic red barn became so popular. This formation was called the Devil's Hole because of the high levels of iron oxide (rust) makes it seem to glow in the light. The caverns were one of the first in the country to have power and was one of the few business and residences in the area that had electricity.
The caverns are a cool 58 degrees at all times, but the hard walking up and down hills makes it feel warmer.
